City of Peterborough Concert Band

BAND HISTORY

The City of Peterborough Concert Band are a lively and dynamic group of local musicians who perform regularly in the Peterborough area. The band was formed in 1987 following the merger of the Nassington Brass Band and the ‘Bretton Blowers’ woodwind group.  The band is made up of people of all ages and from all walks of life with members as young as 15 and as old as 80.  A good example of the ability of music to cross various generations.

All members show great commitment in attending most rehearsals and performances.  The band is able to feature soloists in all sections making for lively and varied concerts.

Our Musical Director is Henry Clydesdale who is professionally involved in the music industry.  He is an experienced ex-military musician who was principal trumpet player in The Royal Army Ordnance Corps Staff Band.  He also led a successful dance band for a number of years.

The band plays at a wide range of events and engagements including bandstand performances, Christmas and other services in local churches and regularly at the East of England show.  Weekend concerts take place throughout the summer in many of the regions cities, towns and villages including Peterborough, Huntingdon, Ely, St. Ives, Oakham and Hunstanton.

Since its formation, the band has assisted a number of local charities.  A concert in 1998 to launch the Royal British Legion Whittlesey branch poppy appeal has now become an annual event.  More recently the band played for the Sue Ryder Care Christmas charity event at Thorpe Hall.

The band has a comprehensive library of music and is able to undertake many types of engagement.  The music library spans three centuries, the band being able to perform wind band transcriptions of works by composers from the Classical era through to light classics and show selections from the 19th and 20th centuries.  Pieces by composers of both serious and light music, including film scores are also included in the repertoire.  The band can provide music for formal dinners, church services, fetes and gala days as well as performing a full scale concert programme.

During the summer of 1999, the band undertook a very successful visit to Germany and in 2001 a tour in Belgium included performances at the Ghent Music Festival, at the Menin Gate and in Ypres.
